In March 2016, MASYAP launched a youth microfinance programme. Currently there are 26 girls from around the Blantyre areas benefitting from the scheme, but we hope to expand it in the future if it is successful. Each girl is provided with business training, and then given a loan of MWK 15,000 (about $20 at the time).
We hope that the loans will provide a route to independence for girls who are no longer attending school, and are facing financial difficulties. The girls can use the loans to start or improve a business, which will earn them an income as well as increasing their confidence, and giving them a productive way of spending their time.
